The Queen Has Called an ‘Emergency Meeting’ About Harry and Meghan

Since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, announced on Wednesday that they would “step back” from royal life and “work to become financially independent,” the royal family has no doubt been grappling with this surprising development.
In an unorthodox move, the palace released a statement soon after Harry and Markle’s, telling the world: “Discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.” A BBC report characterized the palace’s attitude toward Harry and Markle’s announcement as “disappointed.”
Now it appears the queen intends to do something about it. She has summoned the royal family to what People called an “emergency meeting” to discuss fulfillment of Harry and Markle’s royal duties and what the future of their relationship with the family will look like.
“The queen, the Prince of Wales, and the Duke of Cambridge have directed their teams to work at pace with governments and the Sussexes’ office to find workable solutions, and this is expected to take days, not weeks,” a source reportedly told People.
It’s unclear as of now whether this meeting will result in a change of agenda for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who had announced their plan to split their time between the United Kingdom and an as-yet-undisclosed part of North America. Their Wednesday statement seemed definitive, but as we all know from watching The Crown, one thing has always been true in the royal family; you don’t mess with the queen.

A little background:  Smitten Kitchen is approaching its 13th anniversary on the internet, and I’m hoping for all of our sakes that its 13th year is nothing like mine (some very bad bangs decisions and a whole lotta awkwardness). When I began this site, I knew how to cook very few things. What I did know was what I wanted from the things I was cooking and where the dishes I was auditioning either exceeded my expectations or fell very short. I logged it all here like a dutiful aughts-era blogger with no larger agenda for what it would become, because how could I have known? I never knew I’d still be at it 1200 recipes, two cookbooks, and two children of unparalleled cuteness (no bias here whatsoever) later, although still in a small kitchen because I’d missed the Buy Tech Stocks or Possibly Have Become A Banker memo, but this is not a complaint — not about this lot, not in this lifetime. I’ve learned how to cook hundreds of things over the years, and I’ve learned h...

Ed Filipowski, Cochairman of KCD and Fashion-Industry Champion, Has Died

Ed Filipowski, one of the fashion industry’s most powerful, dedicated, and kind public relations men, has died. He was 58 years old. Filipowski was the cochairman, with Julie Mannion, of KCD Worldwide, a fashion-services firm that in its 35-year history has represented the industry’s biggest names, among them   Alexander McQueen ,   Balmain ,   Givenchy ,   Maison Margiela ,   Marc Jacobs ,   Tom Ford , and   Versace . Filipowski joined the company in the mid ’80s when it was still Keeble Cavaco & Duka, a PR firm named after its founders, the late stylist Kezia Keeble, editor Paul Cavaco, and the late John Duka, a writer for the   New York Times . Keeble, the story goes, hired the 20-something Filipowski when he sent her a bouquet of flowers in a Charivari bag, congratulating her for landing the buzzy boutique as an account. He and Mannion inherited the company after Keeble and Duka died in 1989 and 1990, respectively, and Cava...
